The Gate Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Basic Eligibility:

  • Must be a high school senior.
  • From at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American*.
  • Must be Pell-eligible.
  • Should be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident.
  • Must maintain good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Planning to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.
  • *For American Indian/Alaska Native, proof of tribal enrollment will be required.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Boasts an outstanding academic record in high school (ranking in the top 10% of their graduating class).

The Gate Scholarship Application Procedure

  • Create an account: Starting July 1, 2024, you can create an account on the Gates Scholarship website:
  • Complete your myTGS profile: This involves providing information about your background, academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and future goals.
  • Request letters of recommendation: You’ll need two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher or counselor and one from another individual who can speak to your academic ability and leadership potential.
  • Write your essays: There are three essay prompts:
